  • National Wildlife Refuge Week (10/10-10/16)- To find a local event, check the calendar from the Fish and Wildlife Service or check with your local refuge. I found one event in Minnesota that wasn’t listed on the F&WS event site.
  • Earth Science Week (10/10-10/16)- “Exploring Energy- the theme of Earth Science Week 2010, will engage young people and the public in learning about Earth’s energy resources.”
  • It’s a day late, but… 10/10/10 Global Work Party happened yesterday to face the climate crisis. I helped plant trees for the event! Although 10/10/10 is over, you can see inspiring pictures from around the world and get involved in other ways through 350.org

On Saturday, I went to Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge to help with their annual, open to the public duck banding. The refuge is on flat terrain and is mostly wetlands because it lies on the bed of glacial Lake Agassiz (named after Louis Agassiz: the original glaciologist).

Banding programs for waterfowl help scientists and managers make decisions on hunting regulations and estimate survival rates, migration routes and other biological information. Because of the wet conditions in the region, there was an above average number of ducklings hatched this year. Agassiz is one of Minnesota’s Important Bird Areas with 294 species of birds.

Apparently, I missed International Rock Flipping Day! I just found out about it a few minutes ago, and I am now very disappointed. It was yesterday… But the official procedures do say “On or about September 12th,” so I think I’ll just put in some rock flipping today instead.

Now, I just need to find my crowbar.
